The
original Pit Bikes were simply small motorcycles with a
4-stroke, 50cc motor used by adult-sized motocross riders to navigate the
pits at a race (an off-track area designated for setting up prior to
an event). Pit bikes evolved to look more and more like mini versions
of the factory MX motorcycles. Because racers like to race just about anything
with a motor, it got to where the “big boys” started racing
each other on these pint-sized pit bikes on small impromptu tracks. Of course, some guys got busy hopping them up with stuff like aluminum frames, tall seats, etc. –– but retaining the over-achieving motors (usually punched out to 110cc), the 10"/12" rear wheels, and the tossable proportions that make a pit bike such frickin’ fun. Because a track for these bikes doesn’t require a lot of land, backyard pit bike tracks have sprung up all across America. Pit bikes now have a full race series with numerous classes (even one for young ladies), five AMA National #1 plates up for grabs, and an exciting ArenaCross Pro & Amateur Series. There’s as many as 500 pit bikes showing up for events like the MiniMotoSX in Las Vegas. Whether blasting around your backyard or on a racetrack, it’s the latest craze...as the fans like to say: “Pit bikes are sick!” |
Jeremy McGrath, the winningest Supercross racer ever (seven-time AMA Champion with 72 main-event wins), is credited with spawning the sport of Xtreme/Freestyle Motocross (FMX) with his signature “nac-nac.” These days, MC or The King (as he’s called) is hot into the latest craze, pit bike racing. In 2006 he rode for Two Brother’s Racing, and is always a threat to win on his Honda racing pit bike––loaded with trick stuff like a Takegawa DOHC head. Jeremy is great about talking to his many fans and signing autographs in the pits (here he’s in Las Vegas for the 2006 MiniMotoSX Arena Pit Bike Event). NEWS!: for 2008, MC will be riding for BBR and they've built him a couple of slick perimeter frame 50cc and 110cc pit bikes.
Ricky
Carmichael,
2006 AMA Supercross Champion (his fifth) and the most successful motocross
racer of all time, rode for Team Makita/Suzuki. BBR Motorsports built
him this awesome DR2 Pit Bike, which they are now offering as a Limited-Edition
signature model. It has 160cc motor, custom all-aluminum frame, and trick
parts everywhere you look. No wonder BBR has earned a reputation for building
some of the sickest pit bikes around. For
